Having closed the Michelin starred restaurant Ellory earlier this year the sommelier Ed Thaw and his team have opened Leroy in Shoreditch, and thank god they have as it is banging. Having waited a few weeks to head over to Shoreditch and check it out I was excited to have booked an early table last Saturday night.
The vibe is cool. A record player manned by Ed plays his vinyl collection, the menu and wine list both, making it hard to choose what to enjoy and the interiors perfectly suit. The gold edged green tables and simple art work create a French wine bar vibe and the marble counter adds a modern twist.
You can sit at the bar which overlooks the busy kitchen and enjoy charcuterie, cheese, small and bigger plates. The food was delicious, and the waitress perfectly paired the wines by the glass with each plate. I am excited to head back for the sweetbreads and gnocchi as the whole experience leaves you wanting more.
The 100 bin wine list has some classics and some ‘wines on the edge’ which suits everyone and makes it nicely accessible. Teaming up with Michael Sager, Jackson Boxer and Stevie Parle they have started a wine project in Campania and are starting to make their own vermouth…watch this space.
