Petersham Nurseries – Richmond, London
On the very rare occasion when we have a clear diary from events, I love nothing more than treating the team to an inspirational meal. After realising that Richard my Head Chef, Chloe and Jess, (two of SP’s event planners) hadn’t been to Petersham Nurseries before, I instantly booked a table for lunch.
Since discovering Petersham Nurseries a few years ago, I have always hailed it as a mecca of inspiration. It does very stylish semi-alfresco dining effortlessly. Oozing style with rustic, yet curated furniture and stunning dressers filled with overflowing plants. Zinc bath tubs and flower pots decorate the room along with portraits and bamboo ceiling mats to tie it all in. Walking in to Petersham Nurseries, you are instantly aware that you are somewhere very special – the cheeseboard alone is Instagram worthy.
On a Sunday it’s guaranteed to be packed at Petersham Nurseries, with diners in the restaurant enjoying great wines and top notch food, whilst the walkers are munching on tea and delicious cake in the café. It’s a fantastic place to walk around and soak up the wonderful garden centre atmosphere.
We started off our lunch in style with the girls enjoying a refreshing Rhubarb Bellini. The Potato, Sage & Taleggio Croquettes were a definite hit alongside the Spiced Crab with Tardivio Tips – keep a look out this could be appearing on a SP snack menu soon!
It was a delicious menu with lots of inviting dishes to choose from (menu below). I opted for the Tagliolini starter, packed full of crab, perfectly balanced chilli and garlic along with the sweetbread starter as a main course, which definitely didn’t disappoint. The celeriac puree and shallots were a brilliant pairing to the perfectly cooked sweetbreads.
When I see rice pudding on a menu in a restaurant it is hard to ignore. Especially in this instance as Chloe had never tried rice pudding before so it was a must have! On top of the rice pudding they crystallised rose petal garnish, adding a perfect hit of sweetness to the dessert. It looked stunning garnished with pistachio, rose and pomegranate – a garnish I will definitely take away with me.
What we ate from the menu…
Veal Sweetbreasd with Shallot, Celeriac, Capers and Sage
Tagliolini with Portland Crab, Chilli, Garlic and Sea Purslane
Kale, Soft Boiled Egg, Anchovy, Salad and Croutons
Fillet of Hake with Jerusalem Artichoke, Alexnders & Three Cournered Garlic
Herb Roast Chicken with Chanterelles, Majan Golds & Cavolo Nero
Haye Farm Pork, Root Vegetables, Marsala, Tyme & Ministro Nero
Petersham Rice Pudding with Pistachio, Pomegranate & Rose
Steamed Rhubarb Pudding with Stem Ginger Ice Cream and Spiced Custard
Both occasions I have been to Petersham Nurseries, I have been extremely well looked after, the service is on point and attentive and in general its such a delightful experience in a beautiful setting.
The menu was the right balance of classic and modern with some exciting flavour combinations and well-presented plates. This teamed with the beautiful interiors and grandeur of Richmond always makes it feel very special. What a lovely Friday treat!
