I used to live in Brixton in my early 20’s and I have loved it ever since. One of the reasons I still love Brixton is for its covered market and the great places to eat in it. I loved the hustle and bustle of diners enjoying great food in a vibrant place.
With a few independents still operating in the market there are lots of fun dinner places to choose from. One of my favourites is Salon. Run by the totally gorgeous Nick Balfe, it has recently undergone a refurbishment and has, over the years, always been a total treat to dine in. Last night was no exception.
Once I had got over the slight embarrassment of dining with a vegan we had a great night and we were extremely well looked after by the great team at Salon. As always the service was impeccable and atmosphere enjoyable.
With lots of the delicious vegetables sourced from a gent called Ray grows all sorts of brilliant produce in South London at an allotment called Rosedale we knew we were in for a treat.
We enjoyed 4 delicious courses from a set menu. It started off with a nibble where the crisps was made out of bread ends, blitzed into a porridge and then baked into a crisp, definitely a tip I am going to take with me and reuse on canapé bases.
Each course was incredible but the humble Coco Beans were a stand out course for me, served with Girolles and Berkswell, a lovely hard cheese made in the West Midlands which was just as inspirational as the Duck and Sweetcorn combination.
The vegan plates were just as tasty as mine, you could tell the same TLC that went into each course which was a total treat for my friend as this is not often the case with vegan food.
On the menu
House-Smoked Salmon, Elderberries, Horseradish
Coco Beans, Girolles, Berkswell
Creedy Carver Duck, Sweet Corn, Pickled Blackberries, Watercress
Brixton Fig Leaf, Buttermilk, Almond, Blueberries
All enjoyed with a good few (too many) glasses of a Gamay, Domaine Joel Delaunay, Loire, France
I also have to mention the bread and butter, again, anyone who knows me knows I love great bread and butter. Being a little hungover now I would almost kill to be brought a slab of it!
Thanks for having me Salon, looking forward to another visit soon.
